Local rank tracking
A local rank tracker and Google Maps rank checker built for brands with many locations
Your ranking on Google Maps changes block by block. A single "average position" can't tell you that a location is first downtown and missing entirely in the suburb next door. A geo-grid rank tracker can, and Multistead runs one for every location you have.
Local rank checker or local rank tracker?
A local rank checker answers one question once: where does this business appear on Google Maps for this search, from this spot, right now? A local rank tracker asks the same question on a schedule and keeps the history, so you can see whether changes worked. For one location, a one-off check is often enough. For a brand, you need tracking: the same searches, the same grid and the same schedule for every location, so the numbers are comparable.
Multistead is a Google local rank tracker. You can use it as a Google Maps rank checker for any location at any time, but its value is the monthly or weekly history across all of them.
How a geo-grid rank tracker works
The tracker places a grid of points around a location, for example 7 by 7 points half a mile apart, and checks where the location appears in Google Maps results for a search, as if someone were searching from each point. The result is a map of colored dots: green where you're in the top three, amber where you're on the list but lower, red where you don't show up.
For a brand, the value is comparison. Run the same searches for every location and you can see which locations are strong, which are weak, and exactly which neighborhoods to work on. Our guide on how to rank higher on Google Maps explains why distance makes a single ranking number misleading.
Geo-grid rank tracking: grid size and spacing
Every point in a grid is one search, so grid size drives cost and detail. A 7×7 grid is 49 points; a 9×9 grid is 81, about 65% more searches for one more ring of coverage.
| Location type | Grid | Spacing between points | Area covered (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dense city center | 7×7 | 0.25 mile | 1.5 × 1.5 miles |
| Typical urban or inner suburb | 7×7 | 0.5 mile | 3 × 3 miles |
| Outer suburb | 7×7 | 1 mile | 6 × 6 miles |
| Rural, or a service-area business | 7×7 | 2 miles or more | 12 × 12 miles or more |
Match the spacing to how far customers really travel, and keep it the same for every scan of a location, or month-to-month comparisons mean nothing.
What to track
- Two to five searches per location that customers actually use, such as "iv therapy near me" or "emergency plumber".
- Monthly scans for every location to spot trends.
- Weekly scans for locations you're fixing, so you can see changes land.
- Points in the top three, the most useful single number: it is how many places in the grid show your location in the map pack.
Remember that a grid measures visibility, not leads. Read it next to Business Profile calls, direction requests and website clicks.
What usually moves a weak grid
- Linking the Google Business Profile to the location's own page, not the brand home page.
- Location pages with real local detail: neighborhoods served, team, photos, services.
- More recent reviews, with replies.
- Correct categories and hours on the profile.
The local SEO checklist covers the full list, location by location.

Looking for a Local Falcon alternative?
Local Falcon is one of the best-known geo-grid tools, and it is good at what it does: on-demand grid scans you can run for any business, paid for with credits. According to its pricing page (as of October 2026), plans run from $24.99 to $199.99 a month, each grid point uses one credit, and pay-as-you-go credits cost $0.05. By our arithmetic, a 7×7 scan is 49 credits, about $2.45. Whitespark, another well-regarded option, lists local ranking grids from $10 a month (as of October 2026).
Here is a fair comparison. Five keywords on a 7×7 grid, scanned monthly, is 245 credits, about $12.25 per location per month on Local Falcon's pay-as-you-go rate. Multistead's grid starts on the Local plan at $449 per location per month, billed annually, and that price also covers the location's website, SEO and review replies. If all you need is rankings, a dedicated grid tool is much cheaper than Multistead, and we'd recommend one.
| Dedicated grid tool (e.g. Local Falcon) | Multistead | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Agencies and SEOs scanning many businesses on demand | Brands that want the grid next to every location's site, reviews and reports |
| Pricing model | Monthly plan or credits per grid point | Per location: grid included from $449 a month, billed annually |

| Fixing what the grid shows | In other tools | In the same hub: page, profile links, checklist score |
Choose Multistead when the grid is one part of a bigger job: giving every location a site that ranks, replying to reviews, and showing headquarters and owners the same numbers. Compare the full stack on our comparison page.
Questions
What is a geo-grid rank tracker?
A tool that checks a business's Google Maps ranking from many points in a grid around it, so you see visibility across the whole area instead of from one spot.
How big should the grid be?
A 7×7 grid with points about half a mile apart suits most urban locations. Use wider spacing for suburban or rural locations that draw customers from further away.
How often should I scan?
Monthly is enough to follow trends for most locations. Scan weekly when you are actively making changes to a location.
What's the difference between a local rank checker and a local rank tracker?
A checker gives a one-off ranking from one place at one moment. A tracker repeats the same searches on a schedule and keeps the history, which is what you need to compare locations and see whether changes worked.
Is Multistead a good Local Falcon alternative?
Only if you need more than rankings. For grid scans alone, Local Falcon or Whitespark cost less. Multistead suits brands that want the grid alongside each location's website, schema, review replies and reports.
Is rank tracking included in Multistead?
Yes. Monthly grids are included in the Local plan at $449 per location per month, and weekly grids in the Complete plan at $649, billed annually.
